If the injection pump is the ‘heart of the diesel engine’ then the turbo charger must surely be the ‘lungs’. The turbo charger provides the vital air (or to be precise, oxygen) for any combustion process and it provides it by the bucket load.
The turbo charger is one of the greatest ‘add-on’ inventions for the internal combustion engine using waste exhaust gas to drive a turbine that then forces air into the engine, simple but very effective.

The diesel engines and turbo charger are the perfect partner, the turbo increases efficiency and increases the power output where a diesel engine would normally begin to loose power. Although petrol engines are available with a turbo charger the turbo is only there to increase power, efficiency is never as good when compared to a diesel engine fitted with a turbo.

The turbo charger has a very hard life due to the fact that it operates at exhaust gas temperatures and heats up very quickly, the speed the turbine rotates is also very high resulting in bearing or seal failure.

Due to the fact the turbo has such an arduous life failure of turbo chargers is common. Failed turbo chargers generally give any of the following symptoms:

- Constant blue smoke from the exhaust.
- Engine oil leaking from the exhaust.
- Engine oil found in inlet manifold/intercooler pipes (please note, a light coating of oil is normal).
- Total lack of power.
